We start with the first week of our road trip to the best places to visit along the Mediterranean Coast of Spain in the North. If you can’t get there by car, the biggest international airport to reach this area is El Prat, Barcelona’s airport.
Day 1: Cadaqués (Girona)
Start your Spain coastal road trip in Cadaqués, a small town on the Costa Brava that boasts a rich history shaped by various cultures such as Greece and Rome. The town’s economy was based on fishing and agriculture, and its geographic isolation from the rest of Alto Ampurdán contributed to its distinct character. While in Cadaqués, be sure to visit the Salvador Dalí House Museum, Castle of San Jaime, Museum of Cadaqués, Old Town, Church of Santa María, and Natural Park of Cap de Creus. This is one of the most popular beach cities in Spain, so expect a lot of tourists if you are traveling there during the summer.
Day 2: Calella de Palafrugell (Girona)
Just a short drive away is Calella de Palafrugell, a picturesque town known for its stunning beaches and charming rural areas. In the summer, the city is also home to the Cap Roig Festival, which attracts famous musicians such as Elton John or Hombres G.
Day 3: Tossa de Mar (Girona)
From Calella de Palafrugell, head to Tossa de Mar, a beautiful town with stunning coves and beaches. The town’s old town, Vila Vella, is a walled neighborhood from the medieval period and a must-see. In 1950, the town was put on the map when Ava Gardner and James Mason filmed “Pandora and the Flying Dutchman” there. Day 6: Peñíscola (Castellón): one of the best coastal cities in Spain
On the sixth day of your road trip, make your way to Peñíscola, located in the Valencian Community, which is just under two hours away by car. Peñíscola is famous for its Templar castle and its impressive walls, which were commissioned by Felipe II and designed by the Italian military architect Giovanni Battista Antonelli.

2nd week: Road trip along the Southeastern Spanish coast
Day 8: Jávea (Alicante): a charming Spain coastal town with great sunsets
To start the second week of our Spain coast vacation, we’ll be heading to Javea, a municipality located in Alicante that is a two-hour drive away. It is definitely one of the best coastal cities and towns in Spain that you will find along the way. It is situated between San Antonio and La Nao and is known for its stunning beaches, including the Pope, Tango, French, and Granadella coves, as well as La Grava and El Benisero.
Another must-see attraction is the Tallà Cave, which is located near the Cape of San Antonio. This cave opens up to a gorgeous small beach and is a truly breathtaking sight to see.
Day 9: Altea (Alicante)
Located just 40 minutes away from Jávea, Altea is a stunning coastal city that is a must-visit on your road trip. In addition to its beaches, visitors must also explore the Parish Church of Nª Sra. Del Consuelo, which is the main church of Altea and is known for its two domes, which are called “the dome of the Mediterranean” for their beauty and splendor.
Day 10: Castell de Guadalest (Alicante)
Take a half-hour drive from Altea to discover the charming town of Castell de Guadalest, located on a rock at an altitude of 595 meters. This historic-artistic complex declared as such in 1974, is divided into two distinct neighborhoods: the castle and the Arrabal. The castle is perched on top of the rock and retains its medieval flavor, while the Arrabal is located at the foot of the mountain and is home to many visitors.
The castle can be accessed through a tunnel carved out of the rock, and once inside, visitors can admire the free bell tower of the parish church and the remains of the Alcozaiba fortification. At the highest point of the town, the remains of the castle of San José can also be seen.
As you explore the main street of the town, don’t miss the chance to admire the architecture of the single-story, white, and bright houses, as well as the City Hall building that was once a court and prison.
